Things to Think About When Selecting A Home Remodeling Contractor

In a perfect world, every Bowling Green home remodeling company or contractor would do an awesome job, give you the best price and follow through to the very last detail. But we don’t live in a perfect world. So it’s your job to protect your home, money and family by securing a home remodeler who will do the job right.

So how do you do this in an industry you’re not familiar with? We have some tips that will get you started out right:

1. Do An Onsite Estimate

Any Bowling Green home remodeling contractor who wants to give you a firm price without coming to your home and going over the fine details is not the contractor you want to use. Why? They either lack experience, or plan to balloon the charges on you later.

2. Don’t Decide Based on Price Alone

It’s so important to save money. But when you’re dealing with any type of home remodeling project (including things like HVAC equipment), the lowest price should not be the objective. Many homeowners who decide based on price alone end up paying more later to fix a job gone wrong.

3. Hire Based On Skill & Experience

Just because a pilot can fly a small Cessna, it doesn’t mean you should hire them to fly a commercial airliner. Just like there are different types of pilots, there are different specialties in home remodeling. Ensure that your potential Bowling Green home remodeler has experience with what you want them to do. Otherwise, your flight might suffer a crash landing.

4. Get Reviews

Online reviews for home remodeling contractors are awesome, but make sure they’re real. Ask other people in your neighborhood or location. What Bowling Green home remodeler have they used? Were they happy with the results? Sometimes trusting what someone is happy with isn’t always safe. Go look at the work they had done and see if you too are happy with the job.

5. Be Willing to Wait

Reputable Bowling Green remodeling contractors in a healthy market are not sitting around. Be willing to wait for someone who is experienced. You’ll be glad you did! And many times jobs are delayed for different reasons, so it’s highly possible that your work can happen sooner than you’d expect.

6. How Long Have They Been Around?

A new company isn’t always a bad sign, but it can be a warning. Sometimes a new company simply means an experienced Kentucky contractor decided to begin working for themselves and open up shop. However, other times it can mean their old company was sued so they closed their doors and opened under a new name. Get the history – it could save you a lot of grief!

7. Verify Insurance & License

Don’t let any Bowling Green remodeling contractor work on your home if they aren’t licensed in the State of Kentucky (or your current state of residence). We can’t stress this enough! Also ask them about insurance and what happens if one of their employees is injured while working in your home. These questions could save you major legal battles later on.

8. Setup Expectations

Set your expectations up front. Are there certain times of the day you don’t want them working? Do they need to wear protective booties to keep floors clean? Are they good with your pets? How often will they check in with updates? Will they ask you questions or make assumptions?

9. Get Stuff in Writing

Never take someone’s word for it. Sure, you can roll the dice and sometimes it turns out just fine. But getting things in writing can save stress later on.

10. Who’s Doing the Work?

Let’s say your potential home remodeler is very experience and everything checks out. Is he or she actually doing the work, or will it be a new employee with no experience? Never assume. Talk these things out ahead of time.

11. What’s Included?

We know of a homeowner who had a brand new house built, only to discover the price they were quoted “didn’t include the contractor’s rate.” What? So they were out an additional $30K because they didn’t ask questions and get things in writing. This allowed for a shady contractor to steal from them with no legal ramifications. Don’t become a statistic! Make sure you know if your estimate includes materials, labor – everything.

12. What Happens if the Work Isn’t Done Right?

This isn’t a scenario anyone wants, but it happens more than people like to admit. If your home remodeling job isn’t done right, who foots the bill to fix it?

At the end of the day, nobody likes to assume the worst. Sometimes asking certain questions might feel uncomfortable, or high maintenance. But trust us, if a home remodeling contractor isn’t comfortable with your questions, you don’t want them working on your home!

Best White for Baseboards and Trim?

It might seem like choosing a white for your home will be an easy task. Trust us, it’s not! Some homeowners spend hours vexing over the right white.

Is a paint too warm? Too cool? What finish is best?

As any quality painter will tell you, to know if a certain paint will look great in your home, you need to do a small test run. However, with that said, we can give you a solid recommendation that 99% of people are going to love.

1. The Type of Paint

First off, you simply can’t go wrong with Benjamin Moore Advance paint. Do you need to paint the entire house with it? No, as it’s pricier than most. But for baseboards and trim in white, Benjamin Moore Advance is going to do better than the competition, Sherwin Williams included. Just our two cents.

2. The Finish

Now that we have the type of paint nailed down, what about the finish? Many default to semi gloss, and that can be great in certain homes. But we recommend taking a look at satin for modern homes. Satin can still be cleaned, and retains a nice contrast again the walls, but at times provides a more modern look than semi gloss. Again, sometimes we recommend semi-gloss in older Bowling Green homes as it’s ideal for the decor. But for many homes satin works much better.

3. The Color of White

Believe or not, the insane amount of options for white paint can be daunting. The primary color of paint you have in your home, the exposure to outside light, the type of ceiling… and the list goes on. Here are some pointers:

a) If your room has a northern exposure, your walls might look cooler.

b) If you have southern exposure, they might look warmer.

c) Cool or warm light bulbs make a massive difference in how paint hits at night.

d) Some heavy, solid colors might require a certain type of white.

So with the above said, we’ve had massive success with Benjamin Moore Simply White. If you research the color, you’re going to hear people say Simply White has a slight yellow tone to it. Even though this is technically true, you will not see it. The yellow just slightly warms the white up.

If your home walls are a cold blue, purple or red, Simply White probably isn’t the best choice. You can look at Benjamin More Super White. But that’s definitely going to be a cooler feel.

If your walls are a warmer gray like Sherwin Williams Mindful Gray, or even a soft pink, Simply White is gorgeous.

Pictured above is Benjamin Moore Simply White in one of our Bowling Green customer’s homes. It’s situated against a gray wall paper pattern. The trim is Benjamin Moore Advance and the ceiling is Benjamin Moore Aura in matte (matte is ever so slightly shinier than flat, but you will not see it).

Here is Simply White in a pink room. The bed frame was already painted another white (not sure on the color) but the trim and door were painted with Simply White.

Here is Sherwin Williams Mindful Gray on the walls with Benjamin Moore Simply White on the posts, trim and ceiling. The interior lighting is warm along with afternoon light coming in to the right off picture.

In Conclusion

You’ll notice that Simply White takes on different looks based on the surrounding colors in the photos above. If you’re after a white that isn’t too cool, we think Simply White is hard to beat!

Things to Know About Wood Floors

Looking to update the look of your Bowling Green home? You just can’t beat the look of wood floors! If you’ve been around awhile, you’ve seen the transition from wood floors to carpets, and now back to wood floors again. It’s keeps people like us pretty busy… but that’s a good thing!

We could talk all day about the ins and outs of wood floors, but I just want to cover a few questions many homeowners have:

Will New Wood Floors Match Our Existing?

It’s not uncommon for us to install wood flooring in a Bowling Green home where the main areas are already wood, and the bedrooms were done in carpet. Will they match? Yes. We can get it very close. If you know the stain used on the originals, even better. However one thing to know: Oil-based floor finishes causes the wood to “golden” a little with age. So even the exact same wood and stain will look a little different due to this. But in hallway to room scenarios, it’s usually never an issue.

Why Do Wood Floors Creak?

Wood flooring is typically installed on a sub floor with wood joists underneath. If the sub flooring was nailed to the joists, over time the nails can become loose and cause creaks when walking. This isn’t the only cause of creaks, but a big one. When we install wood flooring, we drill additional screws into the sub floor to lock that down. This will eliminate many of the noisy floor issues people experience.

Pre-Finished vs. Unfinished Hardwood

Another common question our Bowling Green customers have is in regards to pre-finished vs unfinished wood flooring. Pre-finished wood is tempting because it can cost less, take less time and you don’t have to live with chemical smells and sanding. However, pre-finished wood floors have slight bevels on either side of the boards which drastically changes the finished look. If you want that classic, smooth floor style, unfinished is the way to go every time.

Water or Oil-Based Finish?

Some people are using water-based polyurethane wood finish because of less VOC emissions, and a more rapid install. A characteristic of water-based polyurethane is also a more natural look from the wood. Oil-based finishes gives floors that classic amber glow that you’ve seen in your grandmother’s farmhouse. Oil-based finishes require a longer wait period in between coats, which means your room will be out of commission a bit longer.

Can you mix them? Sure. We’ve seen people have hallways done in oil (when the home was built) and bedrooms done in water-based at a later time. The photograph above is from a home here in Bowling Green. If you look closely, you’ll see a slightly golden look to the flooring at the top of the photo. That is oil-based installed almost 20 years ago. The lower water-based flooring has only been in a few months.

How Long Will It Take?

This will require one of us to visit your home and do measurements. Your decision on oil-based vs water-based also plays into the overall time.
